Get to Know Our Founders: Miglė Petkevičienė

Please meet Migle Petkeviciene, Co-founder and Board Member of the European Compliance Professionals Association (ECPA), who is a driving force for positive developments in the field of compliance.

What areas of compliance are most close to your heart?

"I’m a sworn data protection geek and a cybersecurity enthusiast! I’m deeply passionate about the intersection of data ethics, privacy, and ethical governance — it’s all about ensuring that organizations not only protect sensitive data but do so in a way that promotes trust, transparency, and responsibility. For me, compliance in these areas isn’t just a professional responsibility — it’s something I truly enjoy digging into. It’s about setting up frameworks that balance the demands of technology with the ethical responsibility we have to individuals and society."

You work with clients in different fields, what main problems do they encounter related to compliance currently?

"The main problems differ depending on whether I talk about a client as a company, or a client as a compliance specialist with whom I am in direct contact.

When it comes to companies, the main challenges are:

➡ Rapidly evolving regulatory requirements: It can be difficult for organizations to keep up with constantly changing laws.

➡ Balancing compliance with operational efficiency: Many struggle to implement effective compliance frameworks without disrupting their business flow.

➡ Cultural resistance: There’s often pushback within organizations where compliance is seen more as a legal burden than a value-added part of the business.

For compliance professionals I work with, the challenges are a bit different:

➡ Lack of representation at board level: Compliance teams often feel their voices aren’t heard in strategic decisions.

➡ Seen as a cost center, not a risk management resource.

➡ Lack of tools or support: Compliance professionals often must do more with less."

How could the association help to boost competence and strengthen compliance culture in your experience?

"The ECPA can help bridge these gaps by:

➕ Offering a platform for knowledge-sharing: Bringing together experts to exchange insights on the latest developments.

➕ Providing targeted training: Offering practical, up-to-date insights for compliance professionals to stay ahead of the curve.

➕ Promoting a stronger voice for compliance at board level: Advocating for compliance as a strategic partner in business, showing how it can create long-term value.

➕ Building a strong, collaborative community: Supporting compliance professionals with a network where they can share ideas, mentor one another, and push forward a compliance-driven culture."
