In our ongoing series, "Get to Know Our Founders," we're delighted to spotlight Jekaterina Govina, Co-founder and Chairwoman of the European Compliance Professionals Association (ECPA). Jekaterina's extensive experience in the compliance field, particularly at the Bank of Lithuania, has shaped her vision of ECPA.
Jekaterina, why do you think compliance is the area where we should focus?
"Given the numerous political and economic challenges facing the European Union, we need to ensure our resilience. On the other hand, different studies indicate that the EU is lagging behind other regions in terms of innovation and technological development and one of the primary reasons for this is excessive regulation. We aim to be a voice for the right balance between regulation and innovation in the EU."
You spent many years working in the compliance landscape, specifically at the Bank of Lithuania. How has this area evolved during your time there?
"A decade ago, we dealt with a few relatively simple business models, primarily involving local companies. The situation has changed dramatically. Our compliance professionals now grapple with global issues, working with multinational giants like Revolut, NordVPN, Vinted, and many others. These companies operate on a global scale, presenting significantly more complex compliance issues. It is both exciting and challenging."
How will ECPA support these professionals?
"ECPA has assembled a team of experienced founders who are experts in various fields, including cybersecurity, fintech,AML/CFT, pharma, corruption prevention, and more. These experts will lead initiatives to facilitate information exchange, enhance professional development, and foster a strong network. Our goal is to promote growth and collaboration among compliance professionals from different countries and industries."
